Destination Teacher

The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia has launched the Teacher Preparation Recruitment Initiative also known as the Destination Teaching Program.

This program seeks to increase the number and diversity of highly qualified teachers prepared through the University System of Georgia institutions. The program is targeted at preparing second career candidates (including paraprofessionals) to become teachers in high-need schools. The program supports high quality teacher preparation and induction programs tailored to meet locally identified needs.

Value

The maximum total loan amount available to a recipient will be $5,000. The Georgia Student Finance Commission is a disbursing agent only for this program. There is no fee to the applicant to receive these funds.

Loan Forgiveness

Within six months upon completion of the program, the individual will become a teacher and then repay the scholarship by working in a high - need school in a high- need school district.

Application Procedure

Once you decide which school you will attend of the ones listed below, you should contact the Program Liaison listed to make sure you are eligible. You can print the application and promissory note on-line, by clicking here. Complete Section I and have the institution complete Section II. Also, sign the Terms and Condition page and you will need an Authorized Institutional Official signature on this page as well. The Financial Aid Office will forward all documents to the Georgia Student Finance Commission for processing.

Loan Disbursement

Once the loan has been awarded, the proceeds from your Destination Teacher Service Loan will be sent to your school either on the 15th or the last day of the month. You will receive an award letter outlining your award.

Eligible Colleges and Universities

The following institutions will be participating in the pilot program: Albany State University, Armstrong Atlantic State University, Georgia State University, Georgia Southern University, East Georgia College, Georgia Southwestern State University, Valdosta State University, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Waycross College, and South Georgia College.
