Careers in Social WorkIn fall 2005, the State of Georgia piloted a new service cancelable loan program to encourage Georgians to train for and enter into the field of social work. The program was created to help address a critical need identified by Governor Sonny Perdue. In January 2005, Governor Perdue announced his decision to fund 500 additional caseworker positions for the Department of Human Resources (DHR) and Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS). In response to the Governor's commitment, the Board of Commissioners of the Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC) developed, in partnership with DHR, a service cancelable loan for students pursuing a degree in Social Work. The program is piloted at Georgia State University (GSU) and provides at least 10 GSU students pursuing a bachelor's degree in social work with a service cancelable loan, valued at up to $5,000 per semester. The pilot began fall semester 2005. ValueCollege juniors and seniors admitted to the Social Work Program at Georgia State University may receive a service cancelable loan of up to $5,000 per semester. EligibilityThe applicant shall:
Service CommitmentA loan recipient may repay the loan through work as a caseworker with the Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS) for one calendar year (12 months) for each $2,500 received.
